The University of Central Florida Men’s Basketball team, the Knights, was trailing by just three points when it began the second half of their home game against the Rhode Island Rams on March 21.
A 20 second time-out was called.
Without a moment to lose, a man in a UCF baseball jersey ran down the stairs of the student section. He bounced on each step in his black Champion shoes and long white-fitted socks. His dirty blonde hair spilled out of his white UCF hat as he carried two signs tucked beneath one arm.
“Hey, it’s Knight Fan Stan!” one student shouted as he pointed to the man running by.
Once he reached the bottom of the stairs, the man quickly and without hesitation took hold of one sign and raised it high in the air.
“Black!” the students in 210 shouted.
He took hold of the other sign.
“Gold!” the students in 209 shouted.
This cycle was repeated several more times before he ran back up the stairs fist-bumping and high-fiving students along the way.
“Knight Fan Stan, you the man!” a student shouted as he ran back up the stairs.
He looked pleased with the outcome of his cheer as he looked out into the seats of the arena.
“It’s all about waiting for the right time,” he said with a serious game face.
Now, he was deciding where to strike next. The game most important to him wasn’t on the court. His game face was on to win-over the heart and spirit of the UCF fans.
And tonight, he was winning.
Behind the character Knight Fan Stan is a husband, father of two and owner of the printing company Jet Set Print. The creation of this alter ego, which he has nicknamed KFS, was born when he decided to make his involvement with UCF a full-time hobby.
Stanley’s friend Robert Brownrigg, a UCF alumnus, said the character KFS represents who Stanley is as a person.
“KFS is him,” Brownrigg said. “It’s just on another level.”
Brownrigg compares that level of devotion to an amplified fan on steroids. Once at a football game a fan told a security guard that KFS was too out of control and needed to be tased.
Both the security guard and KFS shared a laugh over the fan’s complaint.
KFS’ high energy has also won the attention of students who regularly attend UCF games.
“He’s not a UCF fan,” 20-year-old sophomore Andrew Murray, a fan and friend of KFS, said. “He’s a UCF fanatic.”
Murray met KFS last year as a freshman at a UCF home football game and has seen what he calls the “antics of KFS” at every home game during the last season.
“I think he gives Knightro a run for his money,” Murray said.
But that’s not KFS’ goal.
“I’m not trying to be Knightro. I’m not trying to be Marc Daniels the radio announcer. I’m not trying to be the cheerleaders,” KFS said. All he wants, he said, is to be a super fan. A super fan that enjoys seeing the outcome of his motivational efforts.
He can’t help but admit, however, that he’d love to be introduced on the field before football games.
“Can you imagine thousands of fans all screaming ‘Together we can make a difference, together we are UCF,’” he said. “I’d be like crying saying ‘I can’t believe it!’”
Stanley’s wife, a UCF alumna, first brought him to a football game 16 years ago when they became season ticket holders. However, the character KFS wasn’t born until three years ago when Bright House Stadium was first built. When Stanley looked out into the empty seats in the stadium, he decided he wanted to make a difference.
Because of this love for UCF, he decided to give back by devoting his time and commitment to UCF. He felt he had become a part of the community.
“This is my home,” he said.
So he created the extremely animated character, KFS ( Knight Fan Stan )
During football games while his wife and kids, aged 13 and 9, sit in the alumni section, KFS runs laps around the stadium plotting his next KFS attack on a section. He sits in his seat for maybe ten or fifteen minutes total, he said.
“I’ll text my wife right after a cheer and ask her ‘Did you see them going nuts?’” KFS said. “She’ll admit ‘Yeah, yeah I saw them.’ I know she’s proud.”
